FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (Updated 022807)
What will the URL be used for?URL is needed to
download application.
URL can be a link to download the needed global-viewing application.
The application and any specialized functionalities would then leverage
the net. If need be, the specialized functionality could simulate
leveraging the net by accessing local data, since some folks may not be
able to setup a network server. Still, this local data will need to be
installed. A URL will be needed to access that data installation. But
this is definitely not a remote control exercise.
Do applications need to prove capacity as web-browsers?
Viewable via the web, does not necessarily mean web-browser capable.
Can commercial software be used?
Applications must enable judges to view data and application freely. Application and data must be free to access. Free access is mandatory.
Can the application be maintained on a local server?Application
needs to be driven locally, additional data can be installed and stored
locally or, more appropriately, accessible via the web, e.g., GeoRSS,
Shapefiles, et cetera.
How can I train the judges to use my application?
Clear and simple instructions for running application are a must.
Judges will judge, they will not go through any learning curve or training.
